Ex-Cop Busted On Weapons,Child Porn Charges
Evidence Seized From Girlfriend's Rockaway Apartment
By Nicholas Briano

An ex-cop from South Ozone Park was arrested last week after detectives seized three computers containing child pornography from his girlfriend's Rockaway Park apartment.

The suspect, Matthew Fanning, 44, of 125-10 115 Avenue faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of all the charges, a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said. Fanning is also accused of storing an arsenal of illegal weapons and more than 1500 rounds of ammunition under his living room couch.

The weapons recovered by the NYPD Computer Crimes Squad, included a loaded .38 caliber revolver, a loaded .22 caliber rifle, an unregistered loaded .223 caliber rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun, according to Brown.

His girlfriend, whose name was not released by police, reportedly lives at 8800 Shore Front Parkway with her fourteen-year-old daughter. Police say that Fanning often spent the weekend at the Rockaway Park apartment.

According to police, they are questioning the daughter to ensure that the suspect didn't sexually abuse her in the Rockaway home.

Fanning used the America Online screen name "Gunrunlover" to gain access to his stash of child porn, according to court records.

A "gun run" is the police term for responding to a report where a gun is involved.

On January 28, Fanning's America Online account was confiscated by police using a search warrant granted by a Queens judge.

The child pornography images were traced back to his South Ozone Park home and his girlfriend's Rockaway Park apartment.

According to Brown, authorities recovered three images of children engaging in sexual acts with adults and several images of child erotica in which children were found posing in sexual positions.

"These are serious allegations that are particularly shocking because the defendant is a former NYPD officer," Brown said.

Police also seized more than two ounces of marijuana, a gravity knife and a switchblade.

Fanning was arraigned last week and was ordered to be held on $250,000 bail under the conditions that he surrenders his passport and internet usage privileges.

He has been charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon, possessing a sexual performance by a child, fourth degree criminal possession of marijuana, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon, and other New York City administrative code violations stemming from his firearm and ammunition possession. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 27.
