Undelivered Money For Rockaway

As an AD Hoc member at the YMCA project, I totally agree with Al Moorer and The Wave editorial on Mayor Bloomberg and snubbing of the Rockaway politicians and its people.

For decades many people in the Rockaways lobbied their elected officials to get a pool complex in our area. For decades we heard every excuse in the book why we cannot get a pool complex in the Rockaways.

Finally the Arverne By the Sea project comes along but the YMCA proposal falls way way short of the community's needs. A four lane pool and an outdoor basketball court in the parking lot is totally unacceptable.

After meeting with politicians, the Arverne By the Sea and YMCA people, the AD Hoc committee asked the officials, if they could come up with the six million dollars, would they build an eight lane pool and an indoor gym. Their response was "absolutely."

After much research the AD Hoc committee found out about the 100 million dollars New York City Airport Lease renegotiation between New York City and the Port Authority. The agreement states that the money was to be spent in the area surrounding the New York City airports. The money was to be spent because of the inconvenience of the plane traffic in those neighborhoods. Well, Rockaway certainly falls into that category. (Remember the Belle Harbor plane crash!!!) To date, only 40 million of the 100 million dollars has been spent.

Our local politicians agreed with the AD Hoc committee and signed a petition asking Mayor Bloomberg to contact the Port Authority and release the six million dollars that is needed to finish the YMCA correctly. Mayor Bloomberg has not responded to the local politicians. (What an insult.)

Thanks for your support.

ROBERT ROONEY
