Milestones
Guard Recruit Training Coast Guard Fireman Apprentice Devon C. Tubens, a 2006 graduate of Beach Channel High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey. During the eight-week training program, Tubens completed a vigorous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, firefighting and marksmanship. A major emphasis was also placed on physical fitness, health and wellness. Tubens also received instruction on the Coast Guard's core value: honor, respect and devotion to duty, and how to apply them in military performances and personal conduct.
Nicole Pierce of Breezy Point has been named to the Dean's List at Nova Southeastern University for the fall 2007 semester. Pierce, a graduate of Beach Channel High School, is currently majoring in History with a minor in Legal Studies at the Farquahar College for Arts and Sciences. She is a member of Phi Alpha Delta and the Florida Gold Coast Hammerhead US Masters swim team. Recently, she has been named to the US Masters All- American Team. Final Farewell For FRHS Faculty and Staff With the scheduled closing of Far Rockaway High School, two former teachers are planning a final reunion/ luncheon for faculty and staff. The event will be held at Poncho's Cantina, 4245 Austin Boulevard in Island Park on Sunday, May 4 from 12 to 3 p.m.
Little Completes Basic Combat Training Army Private William E. Little has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. During the nine weeks of training, Little studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice systems, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises. Little is the son of Katherine Hanley of Far Rockaway and is a 2002 graduate of Beach Channel High School. RPHRI Announces New Leadership The Rockaway Park Home and Residents held its annual election on January 8. The general membership voted in a new slate of officers and board directors. The new officers are Fran Stathis, President; Bernie Warnock, Vice President; Michael O'Toole, Acting Secretary; and Joe Moran, Treasurer. The elected Board of Directors members
are Pat Barry, Beverly Baxter, Noreen Ellis, Robert Endall, Sean Fitzgerald, John Lenihan, Pat McGrath, Kristin McMorrow, Pat Nee, Mary Killian-Noone, Ed Re, George Sullivan, Madeline Trezza, and James Walsh.
