CO:Drug Dealers Move To Seagirt Blvd.,OV
By Miriam Rosenberg

Captain Brian McMahon, the commanding officer of the 101 Precinct, talks about the increased drug activity on Seagirt Boulevard and Ocean Village during this month's Precinct Community Council meeting.
Even though crime in the 101 Precinct is statistically down for 2008, officers there face new problems as the drug trade has moved from its traditional Far Rockaway locations to Seagirt Boulevard in Wavecrest, as well as to Ocean Village in Arverne, the far western border of the precinct, according to Captain Brian McMahon, the precinct's commanding officer .

"There's a lot of [drug] activity on Seagirt [Boulevard]," said McMahon at last week's Precinct Community Council meeting. "There's so much [dealing of] drugs on Seagirt because people from Long Beach come over, and it's a quick turnaround to have them go back home. So, [precinct police officers] have been down there a lot."

The captain also attributes the increased drug business to the newlyconstructed housing and the people who have moved into the area.

"There's an increased chance for drug activity [around] Beach 29 Street and where the laundromat is," said Mc- Mahon. "There are a lot of resources going in there."

In addition to the increase in drug activity on Seagirt Boulevard, Ocean Village, called OV by many local residents, on Beach 56 Street is experiencing an increase in drug related problems as well, according to McMahon.

"[Ocean Village is] going through a transition where they're throwing a lot of people out," said McMahon. "So, with a lot of vacant apartments, a lot of people go over there now and hang out and use drugs out of there."

Two officers have been assigned to the OV apartment complex in response to the drug activity.
