for larger version       Leave It to Teachers I disagree with Peter Vallone's proposal of a bill mandating how much homework a teacher may give. This is just another example of not treating teachers like professionals. The teacher should be able to determine what is appropriate for his or her class. To say "10 minutes of homework per night" is a fine guideline, however, what takes one student 10 minutes could take another student two minutes and yet another 40. A "law" on homework time is just silly. Homework is meant to reinforce concepts already taught. It is to be used for practicing skills, doing research, reading, etc. Some nights, a teacher may need to give more homework than others. Some nights, perhaps, no homework is needed. This decision needs to be up to the individual classroom teacher not lawmakers!
