Blowin' In The Wind
Dear Editor,

Thought your editorial on 'snitching' was tremendous, Howard. This fear of 'snitching' is - I believe - the real and grave problem facing the people of the Rockaways, especially. in the public housing projects.

Let's face it, there's a criminal element amongst all peoples. It's not what the criminals do, the key to the perversity is how the other 95% react. If they condone the brutality & violence, it will continue; if they don't, it will stop.

In a letter to the editor that you graciously printed awhile back, I coined it 'Community Immunity'. With a granting of immunity in the projects (or anywhere, for that matter), crime will thrive forever.

Far Rockaway's community leaders - once they finally assessed the problems for what they were - have sponsored these 'stop the violence' campaigns; but that's just blowin' in the wind. The leaders must lead the 95%, not the 5%. The leaders must point out that the right thing, the righteous thing is to 'report the violence'.

I hope you can keep it up, Mr. Schwach, and spur on Rockaways' leaders too!!

PETER STUBBEN
