Remembering Leon Locke Seven Years After His Death
Tomorrow, February 23, marks the seventh anniversary of the death of Wave publisher Leon Locke. Though both Rockaway and this paper have changed in innumerable ways since Leon's death, his wife, Susan, continues his dedication to truth and to community journalism, standards that live on in each issue of The Wave. On this anniversary, as on every other, we remember Leon with the image that remains in the memories of many locals: Leon sitting on his stool in the window of The Wave building, watching local life passing by, deciding how to best report the facts and foibles of Rockaway. Leon is still missed by us at The Wave, even after seven years, and he remains our guiding spirit that will never die.
