Identify Second Arverne DOA
The bullet-riddled and decomposing body found by a passer-by was identified on Monday by the NYPD's Deputy Commissioner of Public Information as that of Derrick McNair, 19, a Staten Island resident. The Chief Medical Examiner had earlier declared the death to be a homicide and the cause of death (COD) to be gunshot wounds to the head. Police sources declined to say where and when McNair had been killed, but there were indications that the murder may have been committed more than a month ago in another location, and that the body was then dumped in Arverne. McNair's body was the second to be found in that Arverne area this year. On January 14, three weeks earlier, the body of Rajesh Binda was found under the stairway at the Beach 44 Street A Line station. The Medical Examiner told The Wave on Monday that Binda's cause of death is still pending an investigation. Police sources said, however, that Binda's death is not classified as a homicide. A source close to the case, however, said that Binda may have been drunk and was either pushed or fell from the staircase.
Detectives from the 100 Precinct Squad are investigating both deaths.
