Hammels Rubbish Fire Brings All-Hands Response

A rubbish fire on the sixth floor hallway of 81-03 Beach Channel Drive in the Hammel Houses complex brought an all-hands response by the New York City Fire Department on Tuesday. The fire, which started at about 4:50 p.m., involved some mattresses and other debris, and took the firefighters only a short time to extinguish. Photos by Chris Kalisak.
The fire brought heavy smoke to many areas of the building, from the fourth floor to the eighth floor, forcing many of the residents to evacuate the building into the snowy afternoon. The difficulty of fighting the fire could be seen by this photo, in which firefighters pull hose on the icy, snowy sidewalk.
