The Mayor Should Respond To Plea For An Expanded YMCA
It has been four months since several local elected officials, including Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and Senator Charles Schumer, sent letters to Mayor Michael Bloomberg asking for his help in financing an expanded YMCA that would include an eight-lane pool and an enclosed gymnasium on Beach 73 Street. So far, according to Marshall's office, there has been no response from the mayor. Silence! That should be considered a slap in the face to our elected officials. Bloomberg was asked to pass the request on to the Port Authority, an agency that has promised community development funds to neighborhoods surrounding the airports. While we heard earlier that the request had been sent on to the PA, it now looks like that never happened. Perhaps Rockaway should show the mayor that the community will not be snubbed. It can do that by demonstrating when the mayor visits Rockaway for his annual St. Patrick's Day Parade stint. Perhaps the parade committee should take back its invitation, to show the mayor how the community feels about his snub. That will probably not happen, however. Individual locals can show their distaste in many ways. Turn your back when the mayor walks by. Carry signs and placards showing your disapproval. Yell out your protest. All we ask is that the mayor respond. To ignore Rockaway, however, is something that none of us should accept from an elected official.
