Keep Sexual Predators Away From School Children

It should be clear to everyone that there is a need to keep sexual predators separated from children. The front-page story in last week's Wave has spurred a wave of anger and consternation throughout the peninsula. The conventional wisdom was that there is a New York State law that keeps convicted sex offenders from living near a school, but that turns out not to be true. While several counties and cities in the state have their own local laws keeping registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school or playground, neither the state nor New York City have such a regulation. They should. We call on Audrey Pheffer, Malcolm Smith and Michelle Titus to quickly get to work on a state bill that would keep Level 3 sex from living within 1,000 feet of a school or playground and Level 1 and 2 sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school or playground. City Councilman Joseph Addabbo has proposed a bill in the council that would keep Level 3 sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school or playground, but leaves no restrictions on Level 2 or Level 1 offenders. That should change. A recent survey found nearly 20 registered sex offenders living within 1,000 feet of a local school. That has to end and end soon. Children and sexual predators do not mix.
