for larger version       Addabbo And Committee Discuss Women Concerns Councilman Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., chairman of the City Council Civil Service and Labor Committee and the Committee on Women's Issues chairperson, Councilwoman Helen Sears, held a hearing on the working conditions of women in the city. Although the meeting was focused on domestic workers, the issues raised concerned women in the workforce. "Today we are still addressing the issues of women who are subject to lower pay, physical mistreatment, verbal abuse and other unfair labor practices," stated Addabbo. He also stressed that no worker should tolerate unacceptable working conditions and should report any labor misconduct. Unfortunately, many titles and worker positions are excluded from the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) for standards, guidelines and protection.
The Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, Resolution 1078, which is now in the state legislature, was also discussed at the hearing. The bill promotes a living wage, overtime pay, vacation, sick and personal time, advance notice of termination, and severance pay.
