A Time To Build
When last we spoke with Gerri Romski, the CEO for the Arverne By The Sea project, he was proud of the fact that the development consortium had kept its promise to the community, building and selling homes and condo units centered around the Beach 73 Street center. The Condo units in the Coral House, Reef and Nautilus sections are sold out, as are the two-family homes in The Sands and Palmer's Landing neighborhoods. The twofamily homes in the Breakers neighborhood that you see when you drive down the new, four-lane section of Rockaway Beach Boulevard are almost sold out and the company has begun to develop and sell units in the Dunes neighborhood. All those new homeowners and no place to go. Part of Arverne By The Sea's promise was to build a recreation center and new commercial development east of Beach 73 Street and north of Rockaway Beach Boulevard. While pre-construction work has already been completed on both the promised YMCA (a plan that morphed out of the recreation center plan) and the Super Stop & Shop supermarket, little has been done to actually begin construction on those sites. We understand that the Y development has been held up by community concerns about the scope of the project and with technical problems concerned with a nine-foot deep swimming pool, however, it is February, and the promise was that the shovels would be in the ground by this time. The same goes for the supermarket and the other stores and restaurants surrounding the new Transit Plaza at Beach 67 Street. It is time for Arverne By The Sea to begin building those promised amenities. In fact, it is past time. We urge the developers to show good faith by beginning the construction process as soon as possible.
