Rockaway Native Becomes Crab Guru

Rockaway Beach native, Bert Greenwald, joined the historical Grand Central Oyster Bar, during a three day celebration of the Florida Stone Crab, which began February 6. The 78-year-old moved from Rockaway to Hollywood, Florida in 1950 and began his career selling Florida Stone Crab nearly 35 years ago. When it comes to Florida Stone Crabs, Greenwald is considered a guru by many in the field of crustaceans. The thing that sets the Florida Stone Crab apart from other crabs is its size. The claw, the only part consumed, is three to four times larger than the blue crab. Florida Stone Crabs are widely acclaimed as the best crab on any menu, and Greenwald describes their taste as "beyond magnificent."

Greenwald maintains a busy lifestyle by traveling throughout the United States presenting the Florida Stone Crab at special events.
