Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, 20 students take lessons at the Chess Club at PS/MS 225. The club was started by Principal Matthew Melchiorre in November and the pawn pushers battle it out with each other for one and one-half hours each day. The students received a game to take home and supplement their lessons for many hours at home.

Teachers often drop by to challenge the future Bobby Fischers. Many students have become so good that they are credited with unexpected upsets against the PS 225 staff. Melchiorre attributed his students' victories to "good old-fashioned hard work and practice."
