Local Charged With Ripping Off Elderly Victim
By Miriam Rosenberg

A local woman, Shaimoon Raj, was arrested Wednesday night and charged with a series of thefts that netted her more than $20,000 from an 87 year-old victim for whom she was working in Lawrence.

Raj was employed as a home health aid for the victim when, between November 2007 and January of this year she is accused of stealing 75 personal checks that belonged to the unidentified victim and cashing them by forging the elderly person's signature, Nassau County police say.

The Crime Against Property (CAP) Squad arrested Raj in her Bay 30 Street home on the evening of February 6. In his report, Detective Ronald Schepis of the CAP Squad said a relative of the victim discovered the funds were missing.

Raj was charged with Identity Theft in the first degree, possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, and grand larceny in the third degree. She was scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday in the First District Court in Hempstead.
