Far Rockaway Woman Robbed In Apartment Elevator
By Nicholas Briano

A Far Rockaway woman was robbed of her jewelry two weeks ago inside the elevator of an apartment building she was visiting, allegedly by a man who lives in the same building, police say.

A spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown identified the victim as 36-year-old Mariah Velazquez, who was robbed of a platinum diamond bracelet and gold ring at about 8 a.m. on January 22 inside 14- 10 New Haven Avenue.

The defendant, identified by Brown as Hector Cabrera, 24, allegedly followed Velazquez into the elevator and ripped the bracelet from her wrist. He then allegedly attempted to pry the ring from the victim's finger.

When Cabrera failed to remove the ring from the victim's finger, Brown said, he simply demanded that she take it off, which she did immediately.

According to court records, Velazquez told police that she surrendered the jewelry because she feared for her personal safety.

Cabrera was charged in Queens Supreme Court with third degree robbery and was held on a $10,000 bond pending his next court appearance, Brown's spokesperson said.
