Scholars'Academy Gets Arts Education Grant

The Center for Arts Education has announced its list of grant recipients for the Parents as Arts Partners Program for 2008. The Scholars' Academy of Rockaway Park is among the recipients, together with its partnering arts organization, Magic Box Productions.

The grants, designed to encourage parent participation in their children's arts education, are awarded to approximately 150 schools throughout the city each year.

The program to be funded at Scholars' Academy will see sixth- and seventh-grade students teaming with their parents to produce short documentary film clips about their ancestors' lives. An informational meeting for parents interested in participating with their children will be held in the school cafeteria on Wednesday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m., prior to the monthly PTA meeting. Parents and children considering participating in the program are encouraged to attend.

The kickoff event for the Scholars' Academy program is planned for Saturday, March 8, 2008, at which time participants will have an opportunity to attend a screening of the documentary film, "Irish Ropes," and a talk by its well-known producer, Bob Sarnoff of the Rockaway Artists Alliance.

Application forms will be provided to all sixth- and seventh-grade students. Parents who have questions about the program, but are unable to attend the information session, may contact Janet Brady, Parent Coordinator, at 718-474-6918.
