The 2007 Holiday Tournament was held at the NYC Parks Department's Sorrentino Center, and sponsored in part by Weed and Seed and DC 37. A local resident, Isaac Parsee, founded Team Deuce. He wears the hats "Coach" and "Recruitment Manager." He has demonstrated his passion for the youth of Rockaway by expending his own finances, and garnering support from his DC-37, local 154, corner Coffee Shop, and from Far Rockaway Weed and Seed. Parsee says, "Team Deuce is not a rag tag core group, but a body of people who feel young people are lacking positive role models and direction. The way to work with people and bring them into acceptability with society is to work with them where they are. Use life lessons to bring them along." Working with youth from the ages of 8 to 21, Team Deuce's mechanism is athletic events like baseball, flag football and basketball.
People from that community interact, share experiences and aspirations, understanding it's not about turf or where you live. Instead it's about who you are and giving back to the commu- nity. Team Deuce will attempt to bring youth to a level where they will be productive citizens. Each one, teach one, we are our brothers' keepers.
These tournaments are not just about playing basketball. The prevalent theme is to provide awareness to the youth, and stem the tide of violence. Four 10-man teams were entered this year, The Lost Battalion Hall (LBH), Green Sox, Team Deuce and Sorrentino. The youth attended a workshop conducted by Queens Borough South Community Affairs Officers. Police Officer Anderson conducted a question and answer session with youth after a Power Point presentation on police interaction, and stop and frisk procedures.
