Rockaway Man Busted In Maryland Slay
By Howard Schwach
Aformer Rockaway resident was charged in a Maryland court with the murder of his girlfriend a few days before Christmas, Montgomery County police officials say.

The Rockville, Maryland scene of the shooting death that police say was caused by former Rockaway resident Vincent Castiglione. The photo comes from a Maryland television station.
Officials identify the man as Vincent Castiglione, 49, formerly of Beach 124 Street in Rockaway.

Castiglione called the 911 system at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 23 to report that his girlfriend, LaQuito Watkins, 43, was dead. Officers met him outside at her home in Rockville, Maryland, where they found him standing with blood on his hands and clothing, according to court records.

Castiglione told detectives from the Major Crimes/Homicide Division of the Montgomery County Police Department that they had been drinking together in the master bedroom of her house when they "engaged in a physical and verbal altercation."

According to court records, Castiglione said that he had threatened to hit the victim with a glass liquor bottle when she pulled a handgun.

"The defendant stated that the victim produced a handgun and pointed it at him before he wrestled the gun away from her," Detective Dean Cates wrote in the court's charging document.

Castiglione said that Watkins was shot once in the chest while they struggled for the gun.

Watkins' adult daughter and a friend were also in the house at the time of the shooting, police say, but were not involved in the incident.

Castiglione was held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Center pending his next court date, which was set for today, Friday, January 18.
