Police sources say that a subway rider rushing to work at about 8:30 a.m. on January 14 spotted the body on the concrete about 20 feet west of the subway stairway. When Emergency Medical Service workers got to the scene, they corroborated that there was, in fact, a body at the scene and police units quickly responded and blocked off the Rockaway Freeway at Beach 44 Street. EMS workers declared the body [DOA] at the scene and detectives determined that the body had "blunt force trauma to the head." A crime scene was set up and a Level I Mobilization was called to search the area for clues.
One source at the scene speculated that the man may have fallen, or been pushed from the subway platform. The source said that the death could be attributed to a robbery gone wrong. Ellen Borokove, a spokesperson for the Chief Medical Examiner, told The Wave on Tuesday that an autopsy was being performed and that the results and a determination of a cause of death should be available on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday, however, Borokove said that the cause of death is still "pending further study and would not be available for a week to ten days." That time frame generally means that the body was undergoing a drug screening process, experts say.
Borokove added that she believed that the police had a tentative identification on the man, but both local and citywide police sources declined to provide that identification to The Wave.
