The Graybeards will honor longtime Belle Harbor resident, Jim McKeon, on Saturday, January 26, during the Graybeards Dinner Dance at El Caribe Country Club.

McKeon was born in Bay Ridge and moved with his family to Belle Harbor as a child. He attended St. Francis de Sales from kindergarten through graduation. As a student he participated in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) program and was a teammate of professional basketball player, Brian Winters.

He graduated from Nazareth High School and obtained his bachelor of arts degree from Marist College. McKeona then enrolled at Lehman College, where he earned his masters degree. He has received an Administrative Certificate in Education from the City University of New York at Baruch College, and has completed the New York City Leadership Academy.

McKeon is being honored for serving his country and for his dedication to the youth in the community. As a member of the United States Marine Corps, 1979 to 1982, he was stationed in Virginia, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and California. In 1991, he served his country during Desert Storm. Most recently, he served as a United States Marine Reserve from 1982 to 2005. McKeon was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In addition to serving his country, McKeon also served his community. As the director of the St. Francis de Sales CYO program, he has been devoted to youth since 1994. He also served as the director of the Basketball Clinic for five years, as well as CYO soccer and basketball coach for four years.

McKeon, a stock trader of 22- years, is currently an assistant principal with the New York City Department of Education.

The Graybeards honor people who serve the community quietly and without fanfare; those who deserve praise and applause but don't seek it. All are invited to join the Graybeards as they honor Jim McKeon, one of Rockaway's best.
