Accidents Mount Along Cross Bay Bridge Detour
Barrett recently told The Wave that nearly 20 percent (10 out of 58) of all accidents in the confines of the precinct during the last month have been as a result of the various detours stemming from the Beach 94 Street ramp shutdown. According to Barrett, many drivers are going across the Freeway and north on Beach 94 Street towards Beach Channel Drive and then making an illegal left turn in order to get on to the open bridge ramp from the drive, rather than following the appropriate detours that would bring a driver a few blocks west along the freeway and safely onto Beach Channel Drive. "Attempting to make that illegal turn can not only earn a motorist a ticket," Barrett said. "It can cause an accident as well." The picture that accompanies this article shows a car attached to the side of an MTA bus after the motorist attempted to make that left turn last week. Barrett says that if an accident picture doesn't teach motorists a lesson, perhaps the statistics will.
Either way, Barrett says, all drivers should follow the posted detours when they want to access the Cross Bay Bridge.
