Another Police Execution
Dear Editor,

I wanted to get this letter to you in order for you to run it at the same itme, I am sure, you will run a frontpage story on the murder of another young black man in New York City.

After reading your newspaper for years, I am sure that you will treat this murder as a victory of the police. After all, we all know that Ronnie Smalls was a gangbanger and a thug. Right?

Wrong!

Smalls was a man who had made some poor choices and was trying to get himself straight. The police, however, had targeted him because of what he had done in the past and because of his family history. That is not right.

He did not deserve to die just because he was walking on a street in the early hours of Saturday morning, nor even because he was carrying a gun.

The question that nobody seems to be asking is why the police stopped him in the first place. They had no probable cause to do so and were therefore breaking the law of the Constitution by stopping him.

Since all that happened after the stop came from an illegal act, then the police who shot him should be arrested and prosecuted.

The Wave always takes the side of the police, but I hope you print this letter.

Was there a warrant out for Ronnie Smalls arrest? Were the police actively looking for him? Did he have a license to carry a concealed weapon? If not, what was he doing carrying a concealed weapon? What was he doing terrorizing the hard working everyday people of Hammel Houses, to the point where no one would come forward and identify him out of fear, when he allegedly shot an innocent bystander (my niece Katrina Shin)? He resided in Dayton Towers. What was he doing 'poppin off' endangering the lives of innocent people? Where were his parents during his nine arrests? Did they build a solid foundation for Ronnie to follow, or was he a product of his/their environment? If Ronnie Smalls was attempting to turn his life around, I commend him. However, if that was the case, what was he doing carrying an illegal firearm? And why was he still 'bangin'?
