Edgemere Teen Pleads Guilty In HB Death

An Edgemere teen has pleaded guilty to charges of beating to death a Howard Beach man in October of 2006, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown announced on Thursday.

Brown identified the teen as Billyray Staton, 18, of 320 Beach 27 Street who, along with his codefendant, Alex Brown, 18, of Liberty Avenue in Jamaica, pleaded guilty in connection with the vicious beating death of a man whom they had befriended in October 2006.

The victim's body was found in his basement two weeks after his death.

Staton and Brown pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree manslaughter before Queens Supreme Court Justice Arthur Cooperman.

A spokesperson for DA Brown said that it is likely that Staton and Brown will be sentenced to 23 years in prison at their next court date, which has been set for February 27.

Brown said, "The defendants admitted they choked and beat the victim to death in is own home before dumping his body in his basement. With their guilty plea, justice is served."

In pleading guilty, Staton and Brown admitted that they caused the death of John Canora, 55, by choking him and then beating him with an aluminum baseball bat and fire extinguisher before dumping his body in a drainage area in the basement of his home in Howard Beach.
