In Quarters
By Chris 'Bubba' Kalisak Firefighter/EMT: Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department

CHRIS KALISAK
Hello everyone and Happy New Year! Did you all make your New Year's resolutions for 2008?

Once again the BCVFD helped out Santa Claus on Christmas Eve by taking him around in our fire engine to visit some of his young friends. The BCVFD would like to thank everyone who donated to the Santa run as well as the members who took time off with their families to help put a smile on the children's faces. The BCVFD does this annual Santa run every year for a small donation of $75 per family. We also participated in the Toys-4-Tots run down Cross Bay Boulevard.

We appreciate all of your help and donations; with these donations we can keep our Firehouse up and running.

We can also come to the rescue when someone calls us at 718-474-8888!

Now that the New Year is upon us the cold weather is not far behind. Make sure you are checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to see if the batteries are still good, they should be checked every six months.

Also, please drive carefully along the strip in Broad Channel when there is snow or ice! Obey the traffic laws and watch your speed along the strip. This is where the BCVFD has gotten many auto accidents in the past and some of these accidents were even fatal at times! We want to make sure everyone is safe in 2008!

The BCVFD recently went door to door collecting ads for our annual Officer's Installation Dinner Dance. Every year we print out a journal book so that families, friends and businesses can share in supporting the BCVFD. The dance this year is on February 9, at the Roma View in

Howard Beach. The festivities start at 8:00 p.m. sharp and tickets are going fast!

For further information or to reserve your tickets please call our business line at 474-6888 or call Ed O'Hare at 718-318-5504.

Remember everyone who takes out an ad or attends our Dinner Dance will receive a copy of the journal book for 2008.

The firehouse is always looking for new members. If you would like to help us do some fundraising you may contact us via phone or at www.broadchannelvfd. org and check out our new website. Those of you looking to take an Emergency medical course can also contact us. Classes are coming up! We are also strongly looking towards the future of the BCVFD. By this I mean we are looking for junior members to join!

The firehouse junior members learn all about fire prevention, first aid, and dispatching, while becoming a boy scout with Post 69. The junior department has always been the backbone of the BCVFD and we need more members! Until next time, be safe and always be aware of your surroundings!
