20 Years Ago...


Gateway National Recreation Area is preparing a piping plover management plan and environmental assessment for Breezy Point.

Frederick Walker, 19, boy friend of Vera Monique Wilkins, 16, was arrested late on December 16 and charged with her murder.

When an automobile in Jamaica Bay on Monday morning, December 19, was pulled out, it was found to have been stolen and dumped.

East Sixth Road in Broad Channel, the house at 107 East Sixth Road, other houses nearby, automobiles parking in the vicinity and two 100 Precinct (Rockaway Beach) police officers on patrol in the vicinity were sprayed with hazardous PCB-laden oil about 1 a.m. Monday, December 19, when an old Con Edison transformer sprang a leak.

Matthew T. Israel, son of Doris M. Israel of 385 Bayview Avenue, Inwood, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of Senior Airman.

United States Park Police called to the Barren Island Marina (across Marine Parkway Bridge on Flatbush Avenue) about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 20, found a pilot whale about 6 feet long, weighing about 190 pounds, swimming in circles near the shore at the marina.

30 Years Ago...

Excavation has begun for the construction of a 435-foot pedestrian overpass to connect St. John's Episcopal Hospital, South Shore division, at Far Rockaway, with the Brookhaven Beach Nursing Home.


Efforts by The Wave and City Councilman Walter Ward are about to lead to the installation of a traffic light at

Beach 19 Street and Seagirt Boulevard, Far Rockaway. Ward reported this week that the city's Department of Traffic has promised him that a light will be installed.

Queens detectives are trying to find a car belonging to a man whose body was found in Rockaway on December 7. The murdered man was Charles Zorbe, 45 and he was a newspaper delivery truck driver. The car, a 1977 Ford Thunderbird bore New Jersey plates 517FDZ.

40 Years Ago...


It was surprising how many football fans found time Sunday evening to switch the TV from football to watch pictures of the wedding of David Eisenhower and Julie Nixon.

Approaching Rockaway via the Cross Bay Bridge is an inspiring sight these nights when the Surfside and Dayton apartments are aglow with Christmas lights. It's well worth a round trip to Broad Channel, just to see it.

People whose mail has been fouled up during the holiday are wondering if they should hope for improvement next year when the Postmaster General designee has indicated an attempt will be made to put the Post Office Department on a "business basis."

When the announcement was made Sunday night that the fuel oil drivers had settled their strike and would return to work, a host of shivering people and others who were apprehensive about their fuel oil supply, began to feel warmer.

50 Years Ago...

Last week The Wave received a larger than usual number of compliments on its Christmas issue. People seem to take more time to study and admire the art work on the greetings as well as the merchandise advertising of local establishments.


Rose Levy's new candy and gift shop in the Strand Theatre building has been a boon to many last minute shoppers, many of whom came from Mrs. Levy's old neighborhood in Belle Harbor to complete their Christmas lists.

Former State Senator Milton Koerner, always mentioned when potential appointees are mentioned for Republican preferment are discussed in this area, has been named president of the Republican Club of the Rockaways, another testimony to the high esteem in which he is held by the G.O.P.
