From The Artists Studio
Each year at this time we look forward to the new adventures upcoming for our community and for our organization. As you know, a new feature of this column is the "kidsmART corner," bringing you the latest information and opportunities offered by RAA's Education Department. In addition to that, this week, a few words from our kidsmART kin:
We hope everyone's enjoying the holiday break!
A reminder that only children who were signed up for kidsmART by December 23 will be able to attend the holiday sessions on Monday, December 29 and Tuesday, December 30 in T-149 in Fort Tilden. Wishing our kidsmART families a Happy Kwanzaa!
Look for more next week about new projects for 2009.
RAA's 2009 exhibition schedule provides artists and art lovers from our community, and well beyond, with interesting themes to foster creativity, involvement and entertainment. As you are aware, RAA's family of artists is constantly growing in scope, as evidenced by our newest addition, the Writers Group. There is an increasing impetus to coordinate and combine the talents and energies of our visual, literary and performing artists to stimulate new and ever more exciting projects for all of them.
First up this new season is "Heritage," celebrating our origins - where we all came from, our various and multifaceted, multicultural journeys and where we may be going. A map of our world done in watercolor, oil, video, words and much, much more. A show suited for 2009 and for all times. Dates: January 17- February 15, 2009 in sTudio 6 Gallery, RoCA. Opening reception: Sunday, January 18, 1-3 p.m.
"Geoff's Painting Class Show" (working title) will present the best from the two painting classes taught by RAA President Geoff Rawling. Remember that good artists are constantly learning and seeking to improve and experiment. So don't be surprised by how impressive these "student" works can be. Some have already found their way into RAA shows. Dates: March 8-March 29, 2009 in sTudio 6 Gallery. Opening reception: March 9.
The following shows are open to all artists: "Wine and Dine," the art of food and drink and the many variations thereof. This juried exhibition is open to all media including sculpture, painting, photography, cartoon, kinetic art, music, poetry and prose. The more imagination the artist can bring to images of
the everyday and elegant table, the better the exhibition. Dates: April 18- May 17, 2009. Opening reception: April 19. Deadline for submission: March 11, 2009.
"A Color Mix of Quilts and Artwork" is open to quilts and all media. Artists are invited to submit colorful compositions in any theme. Quilts may be of any theme, design, size or materials. A unique approach to a traditional form is always welcome. Artwork may include, but is not limited to, watercolor, photography, sculpture, writing, mixed media, assemblage and music. The RAA seeks the unlimited vision and talent of each artist to make this a one of a kind show. Dates: April 18- May 17, 2009 in sTudio 7 Gallery. Opening reception: April 19. Curator: Ludmila Bokov. Deadline for submission: March 11, 2009.
The entry forms and prospectuses are available at the RAA office and online: www.rockawayartistsalliance.org.
Next week, the remainder of the 2009 exhibition schedule. (Always leave ´em wanting more.)
May this year bring more peace and wisdom than last year. May visions proposed become visions fulfilled. Happy New Year.
