Walter Patterson, a lifelong Belle Harbor resident, died December 15. He was 95.
Patterson lived with his wife of 62 years in a house he had transported from Far Rockaway to its current Belle Harbor location. He served in the harsh Pacific Theater during World War II, and worked as a florist in Rockaway until retirement. An energetic man of grit, fierce independence and unwavering character, Patterson was an iconic presence in Rockaway. He was a student of its history and a participant in the preservation of The Belle Harbor Yacht Club. He believed in God and country. He loved his family and cherished his friends and, in turn, was beloved by those who had the great privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; son, Walter Jr.; daughter, Rosemary; daughter-in-law, Kate; and grandchildren, Joy, Katie, Matt and Laura.
