Once again, children will be able to attend one session per day - either the morning (9 a.m. - 12 p.m.) or afternoon (1 p.m. - 4 p.m.) session. E-mail marinarockart 116@aol.com to sign up OR register at kidsmART on Tuesday, December 23. PRE-REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY. Those not signed up by December 23, will not be admitted either day, as we will not have the staff on-site to safely accommodate dropins.

Traditionally, at this time of year, we take stock of all that has occurred in the past twelve months, and pause to recognize those things for which we are thankful. We at kidsmART would like to thank all of the children and parents who comprise the kidsmART family for their dedication and creativity. Thank you for your smiles and generosity. Thank you for growing with the kidsmART after-school and summer day camp programs. We wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah and a peaceful new year.

The first RAA exhibition of 2009 is "Heritage." What an appropriate concept for this moment in our nation's history. Yet, how timeless. "Heritage" will explore from where we all came and the myriad roads and journeys that led us here. Artworks of all mediums have been considered for this show, which celebrates our various origins, including Native American, African American, and migrations from Europe, Asia, South America, India, Australia and the South Pacific. All are invited to share in tracing a path in art from where we have been to where we are now.

The exhibit will be on view in sTudio 6 Gallery, RoCA @ Fort Tilden from January 17 through February 15, 2009. Opening reception is Sunday, January 18, 1-3 p.m. Gallery hours are: Saturdays 12-4 p.m., Sundays 1-4 p.m. and by appointment.

Next week: More about the 2009 RAA Exhibitions Calendar.

On Saturday, December 20, RAA is hosting a Solstice Music Event. Start time is 7 p.m., in spacious sTudio 7 Gallery. A $5 donation at the door is requested. All members are invited. Bring your friends. Please come out to support RAA while enjoying music and celebrating the upcoming winter season. More than 10 bands will entertain. They include some of your favorites from RAA's Thursday night concerts: Indaculture, Fubar Quartet, Rat Trap Bumpkin, Poorhouse, Mambo Mantis, Breezy Grass, Beefcake, Brutal East, Thy Burden and more.

And remember that hosting a night like this requires a few good men and women who can donate a bit of their time to assist with the business and technical work. You'll be enjoying music, good times and great people while helping RAA. Please call Stephanie at the office if you are interested: 718-474-0861.

The Sunday, December 14 meeting of the RAA Writers Group was very productive, confirming the broad range of arts embraced by and supported by RAA. Discussed was the expansion of doing readings and the exhibition of written works in our art shows. Indeed, member Mary Najedine commented that the RAA is a place where all kinds of artists and writers can come and find acceptance, encouragement and support because it embraces so many different kinds of art. It is not a group that specializes in one thing and one thing only. It really does foster people in what they do and also encourages them to 'cross pollinate' and try their hand in other disciplines.

After individuals read from their work at the meeting, the feedback from fellow writers provided them with the necessary insight into how they could proceed with the work. Next Writers Group meeting is Sunday, January 18 at 4 p.m. in sTudio 6 Gallery. Please come and share your passion. Thanks to all who attended. And thanks to Dan Guarino, leader of the group, who was invaluable in his contribution to this column.

Congratulations to one of RAA's founding members, Walter Gurbo, and his wife Tomoko, on the birth of their son Taku Matsuda Gurbo.
