An Undiscovered After School Program

By Rachel Bernstein

The Goldie Maple Academy, located at 365 Beach 57 Street, has been the home of the Police Athletic League (PAL) Far Rockaway Beacon program since September 2007.

The program offers to its enrolled participants homework assistance, art dance, judo, recreation and trips. In addition to the many services at the PAL Beacon, it will soon offer flag football, cooking, modeling and computers.

It currently serves middle school students between the hours of 3 and 8 p.m. and until 10 p.m. for high school students.

The PAL Beacon program has taken participants to the Broadway show "Thurgood," starring Laurence Fishburne, where they participated in a question and answer session with the famous actor.

Participants of the Beacon program also had the opportunity to see "Auction Block to Hip Hop" and "Platanos & Collard Greens."

The program goes beyond helping and entertaining the youth of the community, it also reaches out to families.

The Beacon's next event, a rally against gang violence, will be held on Friday, December 19 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the site.

The youth of the community are invited to attend.

The PAL Far Rockaway Beacon program has spaces available for individuals in grades 5 through 8.

The enrollment process is simple. Visit the school, request the PAL and complete the application.

Students who apply can begin immediately.
