What About Us?

Dear Editor, On December 3, 2008, Senator Schumer announced he was pushing for a $165 million stimulus package for Long Island.

Everyone in the Rockaways knows our proposed YMCA will be a fourlane lap pool and an outdoor gym (a basketball court in the parking lot). Every politician kept saying there was no money to get a six-lane pool and an inside gym. Once again the ad-hoc committee found some money that Senator Schumer will spend on some other place, but the Rockaways get nothing.

If you remember, Congressman Schumer promised Rockaway would get its pool if he were elected senator. Well Senator Schumer, talk is cheap, but with $165 million, it's about time you kept your word and did the right thing by diverting $6 million to the Rockaway YMCA project.

The ad-hoc committee found the money in the JFK-LGA airport lease extension. Every one of our local politicians signed a petition asking the Port Authority to give $6 million to the YMCA project, but Mayor Bloomberg stopped the funding and the YMCA project went back to a second rate YMCA.

The money is going to be made available to spur the Long Island economy.

How about a nice Christmas present for all the good people of the Rockaways? Let's get the Rockaway YMCA built correctly.

Please, everyone call your local politicians and demand we get part of the $165 million.

Our children deserve better. Let's all unite.

ROBERT ROONEY
