DEC officials demonstrate last month how the former Rockaway MGP site will be cleaned and the toxic soil trucked out of state. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and National Grid will join in hosting a third town hall meeting that will reportedly address toxic soil at both the former LILCO Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) and the shopping plaza that houses Waldbaum's supermarket, at P.S. 225 this Thursday, December 18, at 7:00 p.m.

The school is located at 190 Beach 110 Street.

The meeting was called to address resident's concerns about the cleanup of the MGP site as well as the recent finding that there is also toxic soil under the shopping plaza.

The MGP site stretches along Beach Channel Drive from Beach 108 Street to the Rockaway Freeway.

The shopping plaza site is adjacent to the former MGP site and to its west, across Rockaway Freeway.

The cleanup project was begun recently, after DEC officials provided a demonstration for civic leaders to show them that the process is safe. No excavation or transporting of materials has yet taken place.

Although the DEC has known of the contamination under the shopping plaza for at least three years, that issue has not been addressed at previous meetings because, a DEC official said, it is a separate issue.

It will be addressed at Thursday's meeting, however.

For more information about the meeting, see the DEC's advertisement in this week's paper.
