'Without Control,' Car Jumps Median

Police say that an elderly woman lost control of her vehicle and sped across the Beach Channel Drive median on Sunday afternoon at about 3:39 p.m., causing a head-on collision with an SUV. Police identified the woman as Margaret Edwards, 76, who said that she started her car after getting some gas and that her car "accelerated forward without control" taking it over the median at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 114 Street. Her 2002 Hyundai automobile struck a westbound 2003 Chevrolet Suburban driven by James Lee, 46, of Broad Channel. Edwards, of Beach 20 Street in Far Rockaway, was transported to the Peninsula Hospital Center, where she was reportedly treated and released. Lee was taken by EMS ambulance to PHC as well. A passenger in Edward's car, James Jenkins, 85, refused medical attention. Police say that there was substantial damage to both automobiles, but that no charges are contemplated against Edwards.
