Local activists are acting swiftly to pack a December 10 meeting of the Bridge and Tunnel Committee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) with Rockaway people to show support for maintaining the toll rebate program that allows local residents with an EZ-Pass device to travel over the Cross Bay Bridge for free. Police say that an elderly woman lost control of her vehicle and sped across the Beach Channel Drive median on Sunday afternoon at about 3:39 p.m., causing a head-on collision with an SUV. Police identified the woman as Margaret Edwards, 76, who said that she started her car after getting some gas and that her car "accelerated forward without control" taking it over the median at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 114 Street. Her 2002 Hyundai automobile struck a westbound 2003 Chevrolet Suburban driven by James Lee, 46, of Broad Channel. Edwards, of Beach 20 Street in Far Rockaway, was transported to the Peninsula Hospital Center, where she was reportedly treated and released. Lee was taken by EMS ambulance to PHC as well. A passenger in Edward's car, James Jenkins, 85, refused medical attention. Police say that there was substantial damage to both automobiles, but that no charges are contemplated against Edwards. Phil Ferrandino, a seventh grade student at St. Francis de Sales School, has been named runnerup in the Radio City Music Hall Contest which is co-sponsored by the Diocese of Brooklyn and Radio City. His essay, "What the Blessings of Christmas Mean to Me," was selected from numerous entries from many schools in the Diocese. The Rockaway Artists Alliance's Bake Off inaugural event, which was held on Sunday, November 22 at sTudio 6 Gallery at Fort Tilden, was a success. During the first ever holiday Bake Off the baking arts took center stage. Thomas Crawley, a 57-year Rockaway resident, coming from the Bronx, died November 29. Crawley was born in Pennsylvania. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a former construction worker and taxi driver. He is survived by his sisters, Maureen Gilboy, Pat Paolini, Joyce DiRosa and Margie Crawley; and many nieces and nephews. More...
