SFDS Girls Intramural Season Ends As Champions

Two weekends ago, the championship games for the St. Francis de Sales Girls Intramurals took place

The first game was for the Junior Division Championship with Georgetown taking on the undefeated UCONN. Georgetown came out victorious and won the title which ended UCONN's undefeated run.

In defeat, UCONN displayed an exceptional team effort. point guard Erin Klein created scoring chances for Lauren Guidarelli and Kayla Rayder, whose baskets kept the game close. Cliona Smith, Erica Sorenson and Meaghan LaSorsa were tough on defense The tough defensive play of Anna Levin was missed as she was not able to make it to the last game.

The championship game in the Rookie Girls division had Bishop Kearney defeating St Francis Prep 20- 13 in a hard fought battle.

When these two teams met in the regular season they played an exciting overtime game. The final game was no different with fast paced action and great defense by both teams.

The game was tied at 11 points each, when the Kearney offensive trio of Courtney McCool, Katie Marquardt and Megan Twomey began to run the court, shooting layups and grabbing key offensive rebounds.

Kearney's defense was the key to victory, with McCool dominating the middle, Claire Hughes, Grace DeCresenzo and Kerrianne Blum playing great zone defense and the constant pressure on the ball by the super quick Marquardt.

Playing tough defense under the basket and big rebounding by Lindsay DeBoer, Sydney O'Brien and Ciara Smith helped the Kearney team get the win by a score of 20-13.

St. Francis Prep's Kelly Ward, Emma Meade and Lauren Marten provided the offensive spark. Aggressive defense by Alice Murphy, Bridget O'Rourke and Makayla Beehler held the strong Bishop Kearney team to a one point half time lead.

The second half saw Kearney go on a scoring spree to pull ahead for good. Elizabeth Clark, Ava Evangelista and Kaliegh Gilroy all had a solid game. Danielle Sconzo capped a fine season by ending the game taking two foul shots.

All the girls from both teams should be proud of how well they played and the exciting game they provided the fans.

It was a very successful season and a special thanks to all the coaches and parents who helped to make it happen. Congrats to all!!
