Sounds like a very interesting show, with a lot of potential for artist creativity and for making a statement. It will explore from where we all came and the myriad roads and journeys that led us here.

Artwork of all mediums will be considered for this exhibition, which celebrates our various origins, including Native American, African American, and migrations from Europe, Asia, South America, India, Australia and the South Pacific.

All are invited to trace a path in art from where we have been to where we are now.

The entry form and prospectus are available at the RAA office and online: www.rockawayartistsalliance.org.

The exhibit will be on view in sTudio 6 Gallery, RoCA @ Fort Tilden from January 17 through February 15, 2009.

Friday night drawing sessions at YYY Art Studio, 8-11 p.m. with live model. Located at 241 Beach 116 Street, 2nd floor. $20 per session includes supplies. Call to register 718- 318-0491 or email: yuri@yyyurov.com.

On view through December 7 is the timely group exhibition, "Planet in Crisis." Eighteen artists reflect on the environment. Participating are several members of 14 Sculptors who are also members of RAA, including Esther A. Grillo, and artists who have exhibited with RAA. The show is at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Azarian McCullough Gallery in Sparkhill, New York. For information: 845-389-4195.

Special General Meeting: Party, Elections, Grab Bag

The next RAA general meeting is December 8 in sTudio 6 Gallery, Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Fort Tilden, starting at 7:30 p.m. As always, all are welcome, all are encouraged to bring their artwork to share and display and receive (only if desired) the constructive feedback from others who share your passion for the arts.

The meeting will include the election of seven board members, including vice president and treasurer. Any RAA member in good standing who is interested in doing so has the opportunity to run for office. Contact the RAA office for information.

After elections, the Holiday Party will begin. Feel free to contribute your own delicious comestibles to the gathering of gourmet goodies that will be available, prepared by our expert team from the Exhibitions Committee.

Last but not least, the Grab Bag!!! Yes, my friends. At last. A charitable means of disposing of … uh, I mean … contributing Grandma's 1970 Borghasia earmuffs to someone who will truly appreciate them. Or, you could bring something inexpensive that you actually like, just because of the sheer goodness in your heart and soul. You never know. You might get something equally wonderful in return. (Or not.) As I say each year, one person's 'dreck' is another person's treasure. And one person's treasure … So wrap it, ribbon it, bring it and kiss it good-bye. And choose a mystery gift from the Grab Bag Table. One year I chose what turned out to be a wonderful small floral painting by an artist who was a teacher and classmate of mine at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. How it found its way to the RAA table, I have no idea. But it was truly a gift. The artist, Peter Nelson, died a few years ago, but his talent and generous spirit live on in my home.

"Gifted" highlights:

Joan Boudreault and N.R. Mitgang are both visual and literary artists. In their works in "Gifted" they expand the framework of their creative expression into more than one dimension. In "Time," Boudreault presents the face of a clock, supplementing, reinforcing the image with a poem that holds the onlooker in a multi-disciplinary rumination. Mitgang's photographic image in "The Artist" is accompanied by prose, that the viewer is drawn to believe is autobiographical, on the inescapable, "addictive" experience and passion that is being an artist. Each one of Mitgang's photography/literary works is very personal, sensitive and poignantly expressed.

My apologies to the gods of theater. In my column last week I misspelled the last name of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. I realized it too late — after publication.

RAA thanks the Exhibitions Committee and all who attended the November 16 opening reception for "Gifted." Kudos to singer/songwriter/ musician Mike Benedetto and to Dan Guarino for providing an afternoon of terrific entertainment.
