St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Kicks Off C.Y.O. Season

An old-school C.Y.O. feeling returned to Rockaway on Saturday, November 1, as the St. Camillus/St. Virgilius boys provided a full day of basketball. The S.C.V. 7th Grade team opened the season with a very exciting game against Our Lady of Hope.

The opposition came out strong and had an early lead but S.C.V. fought back to make it a 3-point game by halftime. In the third quarter, Keon Dela Cruz led the St Camillus/Virgilius team by scoring 6 out of his 12 points. Through most of the fourth quarter, the teams traded leads. Mike Castellano (8 points) and Conor Ward (4 points) kept St Camillus/Virgilius close with their outside shooting.

Shea Slocombe, Joe Kennedy, and Michael LaPorte played tough defense and added two points each. In the final minute, Our Lady of Hope hit a foul shot to take the lead 31 to 30.

Although S.C.V. forced a turnover in the final seconds of the game, they were unable to score and came up one point short.

Next up was the St Camillus/ Virgilius Intermediate (8th Grade) squad. The defending Interparish Basketball League (I.B.L.) champions opened their season against Our Lady of Mercy.

Although O.L.M. had a height advantage, Camillus was able to dominate the boards and the inside game. But the Camillus team though came up short in a 34-30 defeat. Turnovers and foul shooting contributed to the loss. Anthony Laporta (13 points) and Sean O'Connell (11 points) led the offensive attack, while Bryan Brennan helped out on the boards. Tristan Nevirs, Dennis Nee, Lewis Cohen, Reilly Sullivan, Anthony Colon and Shea Pires round out the squad, who through hard work this year hope to repeat as I.B.L. Champs and bring home a C.Y.O. title.

The S.C.V. Cadet (9th Grade) boys won their first game of the season against St. Margarets by the score 43- 33. The team was led by Jyshawn Allen (13 points), Kareem Padgett (11 points) and Scott Appelman (8 points). Julian, Mike, Kieran, Tommy, Nakief and Andrew all played well as they hustled and played physical against a team that was much bigger.

It was a great team effort, as this team playing together for the first time looks forward to getting better.

On Sunday (November 2), the S.C.V. 9th Grade boys lost a hard fought battle to St. Mary Gate of Heaven by the score of 37-27. The team was led by Jyshawn Allen (8 points), Kareem Padgett 7 points) and Julian Morales (5 points). Mike, Kieran and Scott battled with the bigger team under the boards all game. Andrew, Tommy and Nakief also hit some big shots and made some nice passes. The boys played well for three of the four quarters, but came up short.

In their season opener on Saturday, November 1, the S.C.V. Tyro (10th Grade) boys team won their first game in triple overtime against a tough St. Thomas Apostle squad by the score 70- 64. The team was led by John Galimi (34 points) as he also hit many clutch free throws. Lemont Bryant (12 points) and Steffan Simon (10 points) also contributed to the scoring. Terrance, Samaj, Gytis and Rocco also helped out with some big defensive plays and some key rebounding. This is a team that looks to improve as they get ready for their next game this week.

Thanks go out to our Parish Athletic Representative (P.A.R.) Bill Swensen, whose hard work helped to make the opening of our basketball season a success. Come out and support St. Camillus/Virgilius C.Y.O. parish basketball.

Week 2 Basketball Recap

It was a tough weekend for the S.C.V. 8th Grade Intermediate team. On Saturday, November 8 they faced St Stans at home and played their hearts out in a 46-40 nail-biter. The visiting team played an ineligible player who led their squad with 19 points and the game will go down as a St Stans forfeit. S.C.V. was down 27-11 at the end of the half and clawed their way back with a successful press that cut the lead to 6 at the end. Sean O'Connell led the offense with 15 points followed by Tristan Nevirs with 13 points. Anthony Laporta had 6 points, Brandon Gonzalez had 4 points and Dennis Nee chipped in 2 points. November 9 found the squad at Our Lady of Hope for a dreaded Sunday night game (parents and players know the history of Sunday night games). The team came out strong forcing many turnovers with their press, but could not capitalize on the loose ball situations. The perimeter shooting was non-existent and the end result was a 44-26 loss. Anthony Laporta led the scoring with 12 points, Tristan Nevirs and Brandon Gonzalez each had 5 points and Sean O'Connell added 4 points.

On November 8 the 9th Grade Boys won by the score 46-23 against St Thomas Apostle. The team was led by big men Kareem Padgett, 12 points and Ian Clayman, 8 points. Jyshawn Allen and Julian Morales also scored 6 points each.

At halftime S.C.V. only led 17-15, but then made some adjustments to outscore Apostle 20-1 in the 3rd quarter.

Every player on the team contributed to the win with great defense, rebounding, passing and scoring.

The team is playing with a lot of energy as they are now 2-1 and prepare for their next game, which is Saturday, November 15 at 4:00 p.m. at home against St Thomas Apostle again.
