Intramural Basketball Playoffs Heat Up

St Francis DeSales Girls Intramurals started their playoffs this past weekend. The Rookie division started with Bishop Kearney "Green Machine" defeating a tough Fontbonne team by a score of 16-10. The Kearney offense was carried by trio of Kaite Marqardt, Lindsay DeBoer and Courtney Mc- Cool. Strong defense was provided by Megan Twomey, Grace DeCresenzo, Claire Hughes and Kerrianne Blum. Rebounding by Ciara Smith and Syndey O'Brien led the undefeated Kearney team to a shot at the Rookie title. Championship game will be played this Saturday. After going 4 -1 in the Rookie Girls division St Francis Prep defeated a strong St Savior squad 18 - 14 in the opening playoff round. Lauren Marten, Emma Meade, Makayla Beehler and Ava Evangelista powered the offense while Danielle Sconzo, Alice Murphy and Bridget O'Rourke played tenacious defense. Great ball handling by Kelly Ward and rebounding by Elizabeth Clark helped seal the victory. They meet Stella Maris this Friday for semi-finals.

For the Junior division, Fairfield finally won a game. Final score was 17- 14 over Holy Cross. Kim Sluyk's ball handling and shooting in the second half lead Fairfield to their first victory of the year. Great defensive efforts were turned in by Cecilia Hanson and Madison Efron, and Rory Kirk once again controlled the boards. Jenna McCann and Serena Yannello were the leading scorers for Holy Cross.

Georgetown were winners Friday night. They are continuing their quest to a championship season. Strong offense as well as a strong defense makes Georgetown a well balanced team. They were led by great offense by Tess and Jackie Gallagher, Emma Michaels, Shannon Rochelle, and Rina Cregan. The defense rocked with Emma and Caroline Collins, and Chelsea Filippi.

St. John's had a great playoff game against Georgetown. Although we lost, the game was fast paced and well played. Our leading scorers for the game were Emma Knox, Taylor Vegh and Justine Twomey. We received excellent defense from Bryn Nagel and Shannon Maroney. Thank you for your help in having a great year.

North Carolina and Boston played a hard fought game with North Carolina coming out on top 17-14. Kelly Davan and Lauren Peters hit some key baskets down the stretch. Emily Carlton lead North Carolina with assists while Meredith Connelly lead the team with rebounds.. Congratulations to all of the girls on Boston College for a successful season, they all played great as a team. Semi Finals are Friday and Championship games are Saturday, all are welcome.
