High Flying Seahorses Get #1 seed in Cup Division Playoffs

By Elio Velez

It has come full circle for a Far Rockaway team, who after two successive losing campaigns will head to the PSAL Cup Division playoffs this Sunday afternoon as the top seed throughout the city.

Far Rockaway's 30-20 home victory over Franklin D. Roosevelt last Saturday in the final regular season game upped the Seahorses record to 8-1. The win gives the team the #1 seed in the four-team Cup Division playoffs, which begin this Sunday at 12 p.m. at Far Rockaway High School in a rematch with #4 seed FDR yet again.

Though South Bronx High School finished at 9-0 and defeated Far Rockaway earlier this season, 29-6, the Seahorses' strength of schedule allowed them to jump into first place with 258 power points. The #2 seed South Bronx will host #3 seed George Washington also at noon on Sunday.

A year after a 2-7 campaign forced the Far Rockaway Seahorses to step down from the PSAL city championship, the Seahorses have thrived on the field in 2008.

A veteran team will need senior RB Gregory Ive, who finished with 1006 yards and 13 touchdowns. to get to the end zone.

The Seahorses' defense is led by defensive tackles Christopher Rainey, Dayne Maxwell and Walter Diaz, who had two sacks against FDR. Linebacker Justin Williams, had an interception against FDR on Saturday and .CB Jevaughn Pinnock not only caught a touchdown pass but also had an interception.
