Smaller Crowd AT AA 587 Memorial This Year

A much smaller crowd of mourners and family members came to the Beach 116 Street Memorial to those who died on American Airlines Flight 587 on November 12, 2001 when the Airbus A300 crashed into the intersection of Newport Avenue and Beach 131 Street in Belle Harbor. The crash, the second worst airline disaster in American history, killed 260 people on the plane and five locals. Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand for the memorial service at 9:16 a.m. the same moment that the plane came down in Belle Harbor.
