"First Snow," Ludmila Vaynberg, watercolor - one of the pieces in RAA's show, "Gifted 2008." Opening reception is 11/16/08. The opening reception for "Gifted," the annual member holiday group show of the Rockaway Artists Alliance, is Sunday, November 16 in sTudio 6 Gallery, 1-3 p.m. Warming up the surroundings and the company will be the bluesy rock music of guitarist/singer Mike Benededetto; the incomparable guitarist/singer/songwriter Danny Mulvanerty, of the band Indaculture; the always entertaining singer/musician/ songwriter/poet/author/photographer/ painter Dan Guarino (I would have said more, but I used up this month's quota of diagonal slashes.); and the tasty, tempting treats set out by the Exhibitions Committee.

And speaking of run-on sentences (oh, wait, semi-colons make it ok), stick around on Sunday for the next meeting of the RAA Writers Group, the sentences of whose members never, ever run on. The meeting of this vibrant, enthusiastic new group starts at 4 p.m. in sTudio 6 Gallery. To all interested in attending, the group will continue to meet the third Sunday of every month, 4-6 p.m. The first gettogether saw various styles and literary disciplines represented. Participants included: Joan Boudreault (poetry), Wilda Gallagher (poetry), Dan Guarino (poetry/journalism), Liz Guarino (journalism), Shirl Holt (poetry,) Jud Kessler (poetry/fiction), Martha Killian (poetry), Stu Mirsky (fiction), Mary Najeddine (short plays) and John Roane (essays). Dan Guarino was chosen to coordinate the group. Thanks, Dan, for filling me in when I was unable to attend. I'm aiming to attend on the 16th. Please come to help form the direction, focus and projects of this exciting, new RAA adventure. Anticipated are networking and outreach, readings, workshops and special presentations.

"Gifted" Highlights: As stated in last week's column, among the excellent watercolors in the show are those of Ludmila Vaynberg. One of them accompanies the column this week. In the reflected light on the sides of the trees, the swirls of brushstrokes, the repeated patterns, one hears the eloquent silence, sees the unique light, is held in the searching winds of a lonesome yet mesmerizing deserted city street on a winter night.

"Birdman" Denis Macrae is a special man. His acrylic paintings on canvas board are primitive, colorful and pure - like the open-eyed, glorious fantasies of a child.

RAA's next exhibition is "Heritage." It will explore from where we all came and the myriad roads and journeys that led us here. Artwork of all mediums will be considered for this exhibition, which celebrates our various origins, including Native American, African American, and migrations from Europe, Asia, South America, India, Australia and the South Pacific. All are invited to trace a path in art from where we have been to where we are now. Deadline for receipt of entries: December 1, 2008.

The entry form and prospectus will be available shortly at the RAA office and online: www.rockawayartistsalli ance.org.

RAA will be hosting a (yummy) Bake Off on November 22, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the RAA galleries, just in time for your holiday sweet tooths (teeth?). We are looking for bakers to enter the contest in the categories: Pies, Cakes, Cookies and Holiday Breads. There will be prizes, and delicious treats will abound. Special guest judges. Not giving names as yet. But be assured — they know from goooooood baking!

To enter the Bake Off, please call 718-474-0861 for an entry form, or visit www.rockawayartistsalliance.org.

Deadline to enter is Nov 19, 2008. If you're not into baking, come to be a taster. We will need you to sample and then judge the people's choice award. Empty stomachs optional.

December's general meeting will consist of elections for board members and a holiday party. Seven positions on the board will be voted on, including the offices of treasurer and vice president. Any RAA member in good standing who is interested in doing so has the opportunity to run. Contact the RAA office for information.
