Second Arrest In September Mugging

Victim Thought He Would Be Shot
By Nicholas Briano

A second Rockaway teen wanted for a September mugging and assault was arrested last week near his Arverne home after he eluded police for nearly two months.

The accused, Kevin Byrd, 18, allegedly committed the September 10 mugging and robbery of a 28-yearold man on Beach 56 Street and Larkin Avenue shortly after midnight, according to police.

Allegedly, Byrd's cohort, Anthony Wallace, grabbed the man from behind and put him in a chokehold, while Byrd punched him in the face and took his cell phone and $500, police said.

Court papers say the victim recalls Byrd urging Wallace to shoot him and then saw Wallace lift his shirt, exposing a handgun tucked into the waist of his pants. The two men fled without firing any shots.

Wallace had been arrested days after the attack, but Bryd wasn't brought in until last Monday. He was arraigned and held on $30,000 bail after being charged with robbery and assault, according to District Attorney Richard Brown's office.
