St. Francis Compete In Diocesan Championships

It was Marathon Sunday for most runners in NYC on Sunday, November 2, but for the St. Francis de Sales Cross Country team it was time to run their best in the Diocesan Championship. And run their best they did. Competing against eleven other parishes in eight age and gender divisions, the SFDS runners won four championships and two third place finishes. The senior boys (ages 13 and 14), bantam boys (ages 9 and 10), novice boys and girls (ages 8 and under) teams, were first place gold medal winners. Third place bronze was won by the senior girls and junior boys (ages 11 and 12). The junior girls placed fourth and the bantam girls placed sixth.

With their finishing place determining their points, the senior girls started the meet on a good note with strong running by Katy Windels, running a season-best time, Briana Hart and Alexis O'Connor to capture third place. The senior boys followed with Devin Rocks, Kevin Caputo and Patrick Goldberg placing 3rd, 4th and 5th to capture their division's championship.

The junior girls' team of Mary Ellen Woods, Ciara Flynn, Meaghan King, Cassie Moriarty, Kelly Casey and Anna Charles placed fourth in their division. The junior boys team earned third place bronze with fine running by Michael Castellano, Michael Paparelli, James Leonard, John Glynn and Chris Cole.

The bantam boys won the championship in their division with the strong running of Denis Murtagh (2nd), Alex Goldberg (4th), Eoin Reen (5th), Thomas Glynn (8th), Patrick Rocks, Gregory Henschel, James Lunny, Christopher Thuilot and Bobby Dunn. The bantam girls team of Cara Melchiorri, Gwyn McGee, Gabriella Grzegorski, Erin Charles, Annie Murphy and Caitlin Drury placed sixth in their highly competitive division.

Kelsey Flynn placed first overall in the novice girls' race, followed by Devin Gavigan (6th), Catherine Lunny (11th), Emily Richter (13th), Elizabeth Paparelli, Anna Hickey, Mollie Abernethy, Camryn Fabrizio, Maggie Murphy, Katie Roventini, Sydney Urban and Maggie Brady to win the championship. With Aidan Donahue placing first overall in the novice boys race, followed by Daniel Paparelli (3rd), Patrick Murtagh (10th), Brendan Glynn (11th), Kyle Cornish (15th), Terence Moriarty, Kevin Murphy, Liam McIvor, John Fabrizio, Bobby O'Connor, Chris Koenig, James Carson, Dylan Abernethy, Kevin Connolly, Kiernan Smith, Joseph Featherston, Patrick Connolly, Kenneth Dean, Jake Murphy, Nathon Reder, Jason Moore, Terence McFadden, Dominick Maiorano and Brendan McFadden, St. Francis won the novice division championship.

Congratulations to all the runners on an excellent performance and a great season! They all ran fantastically. Thanks to all the coaches and parents for their help. Keep running!

Congratulations to NYC Marathon finishers John Edwards, Steve Gifford (3:47), Peter Tuffey (3:31) and, in her first marathon, Meghan Edwards (3:27). Edwards was one of the original SFDS cross-country runners back when her father, John, started the program and still holds the senior girls' course record.
