St. Francis Girls Soccer Teams Roll A Perfect 7; Fourth Graders Hit 21

Katie Marquardt in action. Katie Marquardt in action. St. Francis de Sales soccer completed another successful CYO season, placing at least 10 teams in the playoffs, including all seven girls' teams. The defending champion 4th grade girls ran their record over the past two seasons to 21-0.

Overall, St. Francis' girls' teams won 82 percent of their regular season games and outscored their opponents by more than 200 goals. The 2nd Grade Girls posted a perfect 10- 0 season. The 1st Grade Girls #1 (9- 0), 4th Grade Girls (9-0) and 6th Grade Girls (8-0-2) were also undefeated.

The 4th Grade Girls were victorious over St. Gregory's by a score of 9-2. The first half was topped off with goals by Maria Di Carlo (3), her second hat trick of the season, and one by Kelly Santiago. The goals were assisted by Molly Breslin, Devin Gavigan, and Courtney McCool, and one goal unassisted. The second half saw a total of five goals by the talent of Emma Meade (2), Breslin (2), and McCool. All the goals in the second half were assisted by Gwyn McGee, Bridget O'Rourke, Kelly Santiago, Nicole Gibson, and Lauren Marten. Great passing and ball control by Colleen Gallagher, Ciara Smith, Carli Bopp, Victoria Stagnitta, Lauren Moule and Mollie Kuhlmann helped keep St. Greg's from ever getting an offense together. The inpenitrable defense of Paulina Ruta, Meghan Gigliello, Ava Evangelista, and Keira Walsh kept St. Greg's at bay from ever making a push to the goal. Bridget Breslin again had a solid game in goal saving a total of 15 of 17 shots taken on her.

The 3rd Grade Girls finished the season with another victory, beating St. Mel's 3-0. From the start of the game, St. Francis took control, with Katie Marquardt scoring quickly off a nice pass from Makayla Beehler. Breanne McDonnell found the back of the net after receiving the ball on a nice crossover from Katie Barrett. Lindsey DeBoer put up her first goal of the season following through on a crossover from Breanne McDonnell. The defense was anchored by Hannah Nicholson and Jessica Morelli, both of whom had big kicks. Sinead Gallagher and Angelina Meringolo did a fine job in goal, preserving the shutout. The team only allowed four goals all season.

The 7th Grade Girls locked up a favorable playoff seeding by topping Blessed Trinity 3-0 in a spirited battle. Fouls outnumbered goals in the scoreless first half. St. Francis won the war of possession but couldn't get shots through Trinity's tenacious defense. In the second half, Therese Boyle broke the tie by sprinting up the left side and launching an acrobatic shot while being pushed to the ground. Therese doubled the lead five minutes later with a sortie up the right side. Nicole Maranga closed the scoring with a breakaway goal up the middle, using her left foot to beat the goalie. Ginna Davan and Devan Sconzo led the backline which had several big clears after the break. Midfielders Nicolette Peters and Helena Alacha played their best games of the year. Goalie Raina Dzuik notched St. Francis' sixth shutout of the 7-3 season.

On the boys' side, the 1st Grade Boys (South) team finished up their season with a 4-0 win against a strong team from Our Lady of Grace. The Mites had a terrific first season with lots of fun and 8 wins along the way. Every single member of our team has shown tremendous growth and terrific team spirit. You should all be very proud of yourselves!
