Simon Gets Nun's Appreciation

Dear Editor,

In response to a letter published in The Wave (August 29, 2008 issue, page 78) R. Terrell questions: "what work does Lew Simon do?" The plain fact is Simon has been working tirelessly in bringing careful resolution to the innumerable requests he gets to resolve issues and problems in schools, libraries, senior citizen centers, state agencies, community centers, etc.

It is an understatement to say how many young people are grateful for the splendid leadership in political internship training Lew has provided for them. He has been equally successful obtaining union apprenticeships for minority workers. Always, he is advocating for poor, marginalized children lacking in the background and preparation for school that we all take for

granted. Lew has spoken out and gotten programs to

make up the education gap for many of these children. And who can forget Lew on the frontlines in Waldbaum's begging for funds to keep catholic schools afloat?

Indeed, Lew is a trouble shooter for pothole repairs, water bill discrepancies, building code violations, DHCR interventions, home-improvement scams, mortgage/foreclosure problems, rent control and rent stabilization regulations, etc. His perpetual efforts in behalf of civic improvements have enhanced our "quality of life" in the Rockaways. Remember his taking on the tough challenge to eliminate tolls on the Crossbay Bridge for residents?

We sincerely appreciate not only Lew's fine record of hard work and accomplishment, but also his integrity, counsel, honesty, and his down-toearth largesse of heart. We wish to assure the continuance of his service and leadership.

SISTER EILEEN McCABE
