SJEH Observes Pastoral Care Week
The Pastoral Care Department at St. John's Episcopal Hospital celebrated Pastoral Care Week during October 20 to 26. With a theme of "Listening Presence, Listen, Hear the story," the week was capped by a ceremony of rededication for staff to re-commit themselves to the purpose of their occupation on Thursday, October 23. St. John's has eight staff members, five residents, and six intern chaplains. The pastoral care team includes Protestant clergy, a rabbi, a Roman Catholic priest and a Muslim imam.
Chaplains make rounds to visit patients every day and are on call after hours to provide spiritual assistance to patients and their families. The hospital also has a Jewish and a Christian meditation room, as well as a Sabbath elevator and a Kosher chef. St. John's is the site of the Episcopal Health Services Clinical Pastoral Care Education Program, which draws lay and ordained ministers from around the world to train in pastoral care and the provision of spiritual care to people in institutions. Reverend Dr. Cecily Broderick y Guerra is the director of the Pastoral Care Department.
