Molloy Girls Win Soccer Championship
Molloy struggled early in the season, but after they installed a new bend but don't break defense, Molloy reeled off seven consecutive wins to finish this championship season. The season was dedicated to the memory of former teammate Katy Grogan who passed away last February during a soccer tournament in Florida.
Mary Louis was seeking to defend the title they had won last year on the same field. The Molloy seniors were determined to revenge last year's loss. After a scoreless first half, Mary Louis took a 1-0 lead six minutes into the half when Justine Kinsky scored from the 18-yard line.
Captain Brittany Dombrowski drove past two defenders and tied the score three minutes later. Molloy jumped back to life. Mary Louis' goal keeper robbed sophomore Kyra Meli from point blank range and also stopped Dombrowski's tap in attempt. Kyra and Brittany accounted for over 85 percent of the Molloy goals scored this season. Senior Tara Klein, who joined Dombrowski on the all league team, controlled the defensive area. Juniors, Katherine Edwards and Deirdre Quinlan were using their bodies, winning ball after ball at the midline.
During the 53rd minute Dombrowski broke away from the defense and scored the game winner. After the final whistle, plaques were distributed and the coaches were doused from the Gatorade jugs.
