Bishop Kearney High School team cross country co-captain, "Queen" Mary Gallagher, (Belle Harbor) ran a season best for the 2 ½ mile course in the scenic Prospect Park's rolling hills. Gallagher finished the race in an outstanding time of 16 minutes 44 seconds, just edging out teammate, junior Meghan "Hollywood" Hayes by a mere half of a second.
Hayes also ran 16 minutes with a time of 44 seconds. Close behind was co-captain, Sarah, "Seaside Breeze" Donahue (Belle Harbor), who ran a personal best of 16 minutes 59 seconds.
This is the first time in Bishop Kearney's history that three runners have broken the 17-minute barrier. Coach John Lovett said it is an outstanding accomplishment for any cross country team. Senior Kaitlyn "The Jet" Touhey (Belle Harbor) continues to make an impact on the team with a sixth place medal performance in running a season personal best by 30 seconds.
Sophomore sensation Jacqueline Nwabueze made her cross country debut with an eighth place medal performance. Senior Patti Ann "Fastquez" Vasquez secured the team title by beating out a bishop ford runner in her sprint to the finish.
Senior Katie Fonseca was the team's final medal winner. The team was crowned Borough Champions and was awarded the coveted team trophy.
Lovett gave congratulations to the entire team on winning the team title for the fifth straight year.
Another noteworthy performance was run by freshman Janelle Bentley who captured the fourth place medal in the freshmen Brooklyn championship.
The school would like to wish the entire team the best of luck as they prepare for the Brooklyn/Queens conference championship this upcoming weekend.
