The 40 mph winds gusting off Jamaica Bay on Tuesday afternoon were so strong that it kept the seagulls surrounding the Beach Channel soccer field from getting into flight. The winds had a detrimental effect also for the Beach Channel boys' soccer team. But the winds weren't the only problem for the Dolphins. More ... Beach Channel was in their normal preparation mode for their opponent Jamaica on Saturday afternoon. But there was uncertainty brewing throughout the practice week that the game would not take place. And their uncertainty was answered. More ... The CYO cross-country season continued for the St. Francis de Sales runners on October 19th with the John Bennett Classic Races at Alley Pond Park. Sixty-one boys and girls ranging in age from 6 to 13 years old ran races ranging from a half-mile for the novices to over a mile for the seniors. More ... Last Saturday, the Green Shamrocks took on their biggest opponents of the year, the West Hempstead Broncos. The game was the most physical these young Shamrocks have played all year, but they never gave up and they fought the whole game. More ... Bishop Kearney High School team cross country co-captain, "Queen" Mary Gallagher, (Belle Harbor) ran a season best for the 2 ½ mile course in the scenic Prospect Park's rolling hills. Gallagher finished the race in an outstanding time of 16 minutes 44 seconds, just edging out teammate, junior Meghan "Hollywood" Hayes by a mere half of a second. More ... The past two weeks saw the BCAC Shamrock Ponies record go to 3-4 in a loss against Copiague and a win against Levittown. In the loss against Copiague, Shamrock touchdowns were scored on a kick return by Eddie Hoff and a 40-yard pass play to Mike Abrams. More ... The Broad Channel Athletic Club, held its second annual golf outing last Tuesday. This year's outing was dedicated to the memory of Chris Keegan, who was a lifelong member of the BCAC, both as a player and a coach. However, most remember Keegan for his efforts in the creation of the BCAC Barracuda hockey program. More ... A huge success occurred on Saturday, October 4, when the Tenth Annual Rita Daly 5K Memorial Run/Walk was held at St. Rose of Lima. Over 400 runners and walkers participated in the event, which was held on the boardwalk and was followed by a DJ, raffles, trophy presentations and medals for all the children. More ... The St Francis de Sales Girls Intramural basketball program has been going on for five weeks now, and the girls are having a ball. In the Rookie Division, the undefeated Bishop Kearney girls continued their winning ways, knocking off Fontbonne and a tough St. Francis Prep team. More ... The White Shamrocks took the road last Sunday afternoon and walked away with a tie against Plainedge, 12-12. After allowing the much larger Bobcats to get a 2-yard touchdown, the Shamrocks scored on a fabulous sideline run by Ian Byrne for 59 yards, to make the score 6-6. More ... It was a great weekend for soccer, Rockaway style, as St. Francis and Blessed Trinity locked horns in a series of well played matches. SFDS came away with two wins and two ties. The Fourth Grade Boys had an exciting game Friday night with Blessed Trinity. James Carlton had the wheels going all throughout the game. More ... |
